As the Scoring and Events Manager at the National Field Archery Association, managing electronic scoring systems is one of my core responsibilities. I've implemented Ianseo at national, sectional, state, and club-level events across the United States. Here's a comprehensive guide to how modern electronic archery scoring works — and why it's transforming the sport.
What is Ianseo?
Ianseo is a professional archery tournament management software used worldwide at World Archery, NFAA, USA Archery, and thousands of national federation events. It handles everything from athlete registration and division management to live score entry, result calculation, and official record management. It is the de facto standard for serious competitive archery events globally.
How Scoring Works on the Range
- Setup: Before competition, archers and their division/bow style/category assignments are loaded into the Ianseo database. Tablets or scoring terminals are deployed at each target.
- Score Entry: After each end is shot, the target captain enters the arrow scores into the tablet interface — typically with value buttons (0–10 or X, 10, 9... for NFAA). The system validates the entry.
- Real-time Updates: Scores sync to the central server and propagate to live result boards, websites, and projection screens within seconds. Spectators can follow the competition live online.
- End Confirmation: Archers review and confirm their entered scores on the tablet before signing off on each end. Disputed scores go through an official challenge process.
- Results Publication: Upon completion, results are finalized, ranked, and published in official PDF and online formats for athlete and federation records.
Benefits Over Paper Scoring
- Elimination of manual tallying errors — the most common source of scorecard disputes
- Real-time ranking visibility creates a spectator-friendly experience
- Automated record detection — the system flags when a national or state record is being approached or broken
- Digital archiving of all results for future reference and dispute resolution
What Athletes Should Know
If you're competing at an Ianseo-run event, review your scores carefully before confirming each end on the tablet. Once confirmed and the arrows are pulled, that score is extremely difficult to change. Score your competitor's arrows with integrity and attention — the electronic system gives you accountability tools, but it is not a substitute for honest scoring.
