As a three-time USA Archery All-American, I've navigated the national ranking system extensively. Understanding how rankings work is essential for any archer with competitive ambitions — rankings determine who qualifies for national teams, championship invitations, and prestigious awards like the All-American.
How Rankings Are Earned
USA Archery rankings are compiled based on scores shot at sanctioned tournaments. Points are awarded based on placement at each event, with more prestigious events (National Championships, Indoor Nationals) carrying greater point weight than local or regional tournaments. Your ranking score is typically the cumulative total of your best results over a rolling 12-month period.
Competition Tiers
- Tier 1 (Highest): USA Archery Indoor or Outdoor Nationals, World Team Trials
- Tier 2: USA Archery Sectional Championships and select invitational events
- Tier 3: State Championships and USA Archery club-registered events
The All-American Award
The USA Archery All-American Award is given to the top 8 nationally ranked athletes in each competitive category (recurve men, recurve women, compound men, compound women, etc.). I received this award in 2023, 2024, and 2025. It is one of the most prestigious individual recognitions in American archery and requires consistent top-level performance at national events throughout the entire season.
How to Improve Your Ranking
- Register for USA Archery membership (required for scores to count)
- Compete at higher-tier events whenever possible — a single high placement at Nationals is worth more than many smaller event wins
- Shoot consistent qualifying scores to establish your official classification
- Track your ranking on the USA Archery website — scores are updated regularly after each sanctioned event
NFAA Rankings vs USA Archery Rankings
These are separate systems. NFAA recognizes performance at NFAA-sanctioned events (Indoor Nationals, Field Nationals, Target Nationals) and has its own classification and award system. USA Archery rankings are the pathway to the Olympic program and World Archery representation. Many serious archers compete in both systems, as the NFAA and USA Archery competition seasons complement each other well.
